What should I know to care for someone with biliary atresia?

Since all biliary atresia occurs in infants, it is very important to monitor nutrition to ensure proper development - before and after surgery. Children with biliary atresia have special dietary conditions that continue as they grow up, such as deficiency of certain vitamins.
When caring for your child, it is important to obtain treatment as quickly as possible in order to strengthen their prognosis. Your baby will need a high level of TLC and constant attention. Make sure they know you are there for them and feel as comfortable as possible. Since the baby will be in the care of the hospital during treatment, medication administration and the like will be in the hands of the staff.
