Is biliary atresia life threatening?

Biliary atresia causes liver damage and cirrhosis of the liver, which can be fatal. The condition can be corrected by connecting the liver to the small intestine surgically, using the Kasai procedure. If this fails, a liver transplant may be necessary. Even when successful, most children will develop cirrhosis by adulthood and require a liver transplant.
