What is tegaserod?

Tegaserod treats severe, chronic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

As an IBS treatment, tegaserod is only prescribed to women with constipation, not diarrhea.

As a treatment for chronic constipation, tegaserod is only prescribed to men and women under 55 years of age.

Tegaserod is a selective serotonin receptor agonist. It works on the nerves of the bowels to improve muscle movement and bowel function.                                                                                           

It is prescribed under the brand name Zelnorm.
