What is tegaserod maleate?

Tegaserod maleate treats severe, chronic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). As an IBS treatment, tegaserod maleate is only prescribed to women with constipation, not diarrhea. As a treatment for chronic constipation, tegaserod maleate is only prescribed to men and women under 55 years of age. Tegaserod maleate increases levels of seratonin in the intestines, which speeds movement of stools through the system. It is prescribed under the brand name Zelnorm.
