What is promethazine?

Promethazine is a prescription antihistamine used to treat allergy symptoms, including sneezing, red and watery eyes, runny nose and itchy skin. It may also be used to treat pain and prevent nausea, particularly following surgery. Additionally, it can sedate a patient before surgery. Promethazine is known by the brand name Phenergan.
