What is alvimopan?

Alvimopan is used to prevent a condition called post-operative ileus in people who have just had bowel surgery. Like other peripherally acting mu-opioid receptor antagonists, it creates a shield against the actions of certain hormones and pain-killing narcotics in the bowel, helping to speed recovery and restore normal function of the bowels. It is sold under the brand name Entereg and is only available for short-term use in hospitalized patients.
