What are pancreatic enzyme products?

Pancreatic enzyme products are prescription drugs that aid in digestion. They are made up of three different digestive enzymes from the pancreas (amylase, lipase and protease). Pancreatic enzymes are used to treat conditions, such as cystic fibrosis or swelling or blockage of the pancreas, in which people don't have enough digestive enzymes in their bodies to break down food. It may also be prescribed for people who have had part or all of the pancreas removed. Pancreatic enzymes work by breaking down fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Brand names of pancreatic enzyme products include: Creon, Ultrase, Viokase and others.
