Can I take olsalazine if I am pregnant?

Olsalazine (Dipentum) helps to maintain remission by relieving inflammation, diarrhea, rectal bleeding and abdominal pain in people with ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease. It blocks the chemical involved in inflammation. It comes as a 250 milligram (mg.) capsule. Olsalazine has been classified in Pregnancy Category C by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which means that some adverse effects were seen in animals when they were given large doses. However, studies in animals don't always accurately predict what will happen in humans. Olsalazine has not been tested specifically in pregnant women.

As with all drug use during pregnancy, the benefits should outweigh any risk to both you and your baby.
