How should I take promethazine tablets and syrup?

Promethazine tablets and syrup are designed to be taken orally. Promethazine may be taken with water, milk or food to minimize stomach upset. Read your prescription carefully and follow the instructions your doctor has provided regarding taking your medication.

However, there are some general guidelines you should follow when taking the oral form of promethazine, depending upon the medical purpose. For allergy symptoms, promethazine is usually taken at mealtimes and bedtime. For prevention of motion sickness, promethazine is typically taken 30 to 60 minutes before traveling, and then every 12 hours if required. For nausea and vomiting, a dose may be administered every four to six hours as needed.

When taking the liquid form of the medication, use a measuring spoon or cup designed specifically for medication measurements. You should not substitute this measuring device for a household spoon. The medicine should be stored at room temperature, away from direct light, moisture or extreme heat or cold.
