Does promethazine interact with other medications or foods?

Promethazine may interact with certain medications. The combination of promethazine with certain medications may cause an increase, decrease or alter the effect of either medication. It is important, therefore, to give your doctors a complete history of all prescription and over-the-counter drugs, supplements and herbals that you are taking, and to confer with your doctors before altering doses or medications.

Although not a complete list, some of the medications that may interact with promethazine include the following:

  • epinephrine
  • metrizamide
  • lithium
  • MAO inhibitors
  • chemotherapy
  • blood thinners
  • bronchodilators
  • blood pressure medications
  • medications to treat bladder or urinary conditions
  • anti-seizure medications
  • anti-anxiety medications or antidepressants
  • pain relievers
  • muscle relaxers
