How is the intravenous form of promethazine administered?

Promethazine should be injected only by a trained medical professional. Promethazine may be injected intramuscularly (IM) into a muscle or intravenously (IV) into a vein. The preferred IV administered is "IV infusion" over 10 to 15 minutes. The FDA issued a statement in September 2009 regarding proper injection of promethazine, warning that promethazine should not be administered under the skin or into an artery because of the risk of tissue damage and the possibility of gangrene.
