Can pregnant women take Toviaz?

Donna Hill Howes, RN
Family Practitioner

Because it is not known how Toviaz (fesoterodine) may affect unborn babies, women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant should talk with their doctor before taking Toviaz. As many as 64 percent of pregnant women in the US have reported incontinence during pregnancy, but the best treatment may not be Toviaz, a drug that relaxes bladder muscles to prevent uncontrolled or frequent urination. Stress urinary incontinence, which is often caused in pregnant women by pressure on the bladder from the uterus, is not treatable by Toviaz. It is also not clear how Toviaz may affects breast milk. If you are breastfeeding, speak with your doctor about treatment options for urinary incontinence.
