What should I know about olsalazine before taking it?

If you have ulcerative colitis, olsalazine may help to keep future attacks from occurring, but it is not a cure for ulcerative colitis. You may have some allergic reactions to the medicine, so you should not take olsalazine if you have had a previous reaction or if you are allergic to aspirin or other similar drugs. You should not take olsalazine if you have been vaccinated for chicken pox within the previous six weeks. There is a risk for potential kidney damage with olsalazine, so you may need monitoring and tests for your kidneys while taking olsalazine. It is best not to take olsalazine while taking aspirin. There could be negative interactions taking olsalazine with anticoagulants such as warfarin or heparin. Be sure to talk to your doctor about all treatments you might be using including herbal supplements and vitamins. Additionally, drugs like azathioprine, mercaptopurine, or thioguanine may interact with olsalazine, causing bone marrow toxicity. Olsalazine is not generally prescribed for children due to a lack of research, and women who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breast-feeding should talk to their doctor before using olsalazine. Olsalazine may cause an upset stomach, so it is best taken with food. If you miss a dose of olsalazine, which is usually taken twice daily, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, but do not take two doses too close together or at the same time. Alcohol could worsen some side effects.
