How is surgery used to treat gastrointestinal cancer?

Surgical Oncology

Cancer surgery is employed for a variety of objectives that include diagnosing cancer, relieving its symptoms, and removing tumors. Used in conjunction with other treatments including radiation therapy and chemotherapy, or used singularly, surgery is one of the most effective cancer treatments. The goal of surgery is to remove any visible cancer. Surgery is often used as a necessary procedure to determine the extent of disease and if it has spread to regional lymph nodes. Surgery is also used sometimes as palliative treatment to control symptoms.
