What is esomeprazole sodium?

Esomeprazole sodium is the active ingredient in Nexium IV. It is given by a healthcare professional intravenously to reduce the amount of acid produced in your stomach. It is a proton pump inhibitor available by prescription only. It is used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ulcers and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. For GERD, it calms down stomach acids to provide relief from heartburn and lets the esophagus heal. It also will hopefully prevent more damage to the esophagus. For ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori bacteria, esomeprazole sodium is used in combination with other medications to treat stomach ulcers and keep them from coming back. If your stomach produces too much acid - as in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome - esomeprazole sodium can improve symptoms.
