How does nizatidine treat heartburn, esophagitis, and ulcers?

Nizatidine treats problems caused by too much stomach acid, such as heartburn, esophagitis, and ulcers, by reducing the amount of acid your stomach produces. Called a histamine-2 blocker, an H-2-receptor blocker, or simply an H2 blocker, nizatidine works by blocking the absorption of a type of chemical called a histamine in the stomach. Usually the histamine stimulates the stomach to produce stomach acid. When nizatidine blocks histamine from binding to the histamine receptor in the stomach, less acid is produced.
