What is the difference between prescription and OTC nizatidine?

Prescription nizatidine is available as a capsule or a liquid, whereas over-the-counter (OTC) nizatidine is available only as a tablet. There is also a generic version of prescription nizatidine. The over-the-counter version of nizatidine is only available under the brand name Axid AR. Prescription nizatidine usually is used to treat relatively serious conditions caused by an overproduction of stomach acid, such as ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), while the over-the-counter version usually is used to treat indigestion, heartburn, or an upset stomach caused by excess acid.
