Why are gallstones painful?

Gallstones may cause severe pain in some people, moderate or mild pain in others and no pain at all in others.

Gallstones are hard, pebble-like deposits that form in the gallbladder, the organ just below your liver and above your small intestine. Many people don't even realize they have gallstones because their gallstones are not causing any symptoms. However, gallstones may cause gallbladder swelling and irritation or they can get stuck and cause a blockage in a duct or in the bowel, which can lead to infection and a potentially life-threatening situation that causes abdominal pain as well as fever, chills, vomiting, nausea, and tenderness along your right ribcage. If you have these symptoms, call your doctor right away.
