Are gallstones serious?

Dr. Jeanne Morrison, PhD
Family Practitioner

Gallstones can be serious if they cause a blockage in your bile duct. This can lead to an infection and rupture. A gallstone can also lodge in a pancreatic duct and cause a condition called pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas. Pancreatitis usually requires treatment in a hospital. Pain from gallstones can be especially severe if your gallbladder becomes inflamed. Gallstones also increase your risk for cancer of the gallbladder, but this type of cancer is rare.

Gallstones are serious if they become stuck in the bile ducts that drain the gallbladder because they cause an obstruction that can lead to infection and pancreatitis.
