How common are foot-related sports injuries?

There are almost two million sports related injuries reported at sports and recreation facilities every year, but foot related sports injuries make up just 4 to 5 percent of those reported - around 150,000 overall in the United States annually. However, this number may actually be much higher because many foot related sports injuries are so minor that they do not require a doctor's care. You're likely to experience a foot related sports injury sometime in your life, but it's usually not a serious case.

Foot related sports injuries are very common. Poor footwear, uneven playing fields, direct contact(kicked or being stepped on) or poor body mechanics can lead to a foot injury. Blisters, strains, sprains, bunions, fractures, dislocations, neuromas, infections, and contusions are all problems in the foot that can result from a sports related injury. It is very important to wear proper fitting footwear, clean dry socks and address any mechanic dysfunctions(over pronation, supination, external rotation of the foot and ankle or issues stemming from the hip complex) to help PREVENT foot related sports injuries. Unfortunate issues like being kicked or stepped on, stepping in a divet/hole or on someone else's foot can lead to an acute foot injury.

Every sport has a specific set of injuries that are more common, but really there are few sports that have no effect on the foot.  Even swimming and biking can lead to foot injuries.
