What causes swollen ankles?

Swollen ankles can have many causes. The most common cause is water retention, usually caused by a high salt intake. Many people also get swollen ankles if they are on their feet all day. Warm weather, traeling or sitting for long periods of time can also make your ankles swell. There are more serious causes as well, including heart failure or a blood clot in the leg.
