How do other illnesses affect listeriosis?

Various illnesses and conditions can weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to contracting listeriosis. If you have problems with you kidneys, are diabetic, or have cancer, you are more likely to get listeriosis and to have a more serious case of it, too. If you have AIDS, you are particularly at risk; the Centers for Disease Control estimates that AIDS-infected people are 300 times as likely to become infected with listeriosis compared to people with normal immunity.
