Why are young children at high risk of choking on food?

Young children are at high risk of choking on food because the diameter of a young child’s airway is about the size of his or her pinky, and high-risk foods can easily block these airways and prevent breathing. Young children also have immature teeth and underdeveloped swallowing, which puts them at further risk for choking.
