What is the first aid treatment for fume inhalation?

The following are the first aid treatment guidelines for fume inhalation:

  • Call for medical help.
  • Remove from source of exposure.
  • Monitor for responsiveness and breathing.
  • Treat chemical burns if present.
  • If victim can sit upright, ask him or her to take slow, deep breaths.
  • Check for other injuries while waiting for help.
  • All suspected inhalation injuries require medical attention.
  • Do not make a rescue attempt that puts your own life at risk.
  • Never enter a room filled with smoke from a fire.
  • Do not go into a fume-filled building without proper gear.
