What is Lyrica?

Lyrica is the brand name of the drug pregabalin, which is used to relieve nerve pain and reduce the occurrence of seizures. Lyrica can treat nerve pain resulting from shingles, diabetes and fibromyalgia (widespread pain in pressure points, muscles and tendons). Pregabalin is known as an anticonvulsant medication. It can also help control certain seizures caused by epilepsy, especially when combined with other medications. Although little is known about how Lyrica relieves pain, many researchers believe that it blocks the communication of damaged nerve cells and pain receptors in the brain. Lyrica is thought to block incoming pain signals by binding to certain areas of the brain that contain pain receptors. In addition, Lyrica is also thought to intercept pain signals from damaged nerves in order to decrease their frequency.
Lyrica is the brand name for the prescription medication pregabalin. It is an oral medication, which means you take it by mouth. It is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for several uses:
  • controlling partial onset seizures in adults, in combination with other medications
  • treating pain in people who have nerve pain associated with diabetes
  • treating pain that remains after a case of shingles (rash and pain caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that also causes chickenpox)
  • treating pain due to fibromyalgia, a condition characterized by muscle pain and fatigue (in people with fibromyalgia, it can help improve function)
