How long will fibromyalgia pain relief with Lyrica last?

Many people who take Lyrica for fibromyalgia do experience improvements in their pain levels, but how long that pain relief lasts varies.

In a study led by researchers at the University of Kentucky, more than 1,000 people with fibromyalgia took Lyrica for six weeks. At the end of six weeks, those people who reported at least a 50% decrease in fibromyalgia pain were divided into two groups. In one group, participants continued taking Lyrica for another 26 weeks. In the other group, participants were given a placebo (a "sugar pill" that doesn't contain medicine) for the next 26 weeks. None of the participants knew what they were taking.

By the end of the study, pain had returned to about two-thirds of participants on the placebo pills and about one-third of people taking Lyrica. Since individual responses to Lyrica seem to vary, work with your doctor to decide if Lyrica is right for you and if so, what your optimal dose may be.
It's hard to say how long relief from fibromyalgia pain will last after you take Lyrica, because the drug's effectiveness varies from person to person. In one study, researchers followed people with fibromyalgia who experienced significant pain relief during the first six weeks of treatment with Lyrica. Six months later, about half of those people were still experiencing significant pain relief from Lyrica, while pain relief had lessened in the other half of people with fibromyalgia.
