Does fibromyalgia cause other health problems?

No one can say whether fibromyalgia causes other health problems. Scientists are still trying to understand what causes fibromyalgia and why it produces symptoms such as pain, fatigue, and insomnia. Until the nature of fibromyalgia is better understood, it isn't possible to say whether this condition triggers other health problems. However, it is true that people diagnosed with fibromyalgia often develop certain other medical conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome and restless leg syndrome. Why fibromyalgia is linked to these and other medical conditions is unknown.

Cause and effect can be tough to prove in medicine. A number of other conditions are common in people who have fibromyalgia. To name just a few:
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • restless leg syndrome
  • lupus
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • ankylosing spondylitis, or arthritis of the spine
But does having fibromyalgia cause these conditions? Or do some of these disorders trigger fibromyalgia symptoms? Nobody knows. If only medicine were like an episode of CSI or Law and Order, where the culprit is identified in an hour or less. Stay tuned -- researchers are working to solve the mystery of fibromyalgia and how it relates to other conditions.
