How can proctosigmoidoscopy help to diagnose fecal incontinence?

Dr. Jeanne Morrison, PhD
Family Practitioner

A proctosigmoidoscopy can help your doctor see the inside of your rectum and sigmoid, or final two feet of colon, with a miniscule camera. This test can help your doctor find scar tissue, inflammation, tumors, or other structural damage that may be at the root of your fecal incontinence. Depending on the results of your proctosigmoidoscopy, your doctor may want to perform a colonoscopy, a similar procedure which allows your doctor to see the inside of your entire colon.
