How does proctography help to diagnose fecal incontinence?

Proctography, or defecography, uses barium to make your rectum more visible on an X-ray. The barium coats the inside of your rectum, so that your doctor will be able to see it on X-rays. X-rays of the rectum can help your doctor pinpoint any structural damage to the rectum that may be responsible for fecal incontinence. Proctography can tell your doctor how much stool your rectum is capable of holding and how well your rectum is functioning to pass stool.
