How can I create beneficial family rituals?

Lynne Kenney
Psychology

Think about this and ask often: “What would be a very simple ritual we could do?”

One practical ritual would be sitting down to a hearty breakfast – that’s a really great way to start your day. What about waffles on Sundays? Rituals don’t have to be grand ceremonies at all.

How about reading to your children at night while they bathe? Tell stories, practice math or talk about what they’ve done during the day. When your third grader is more interested in the computer than you, instead of creating a situation where you are fighting about this every day, create a family ritual that takes care of the problem naturally and positively.

You can create a Saturday afternoon hiking ritual, and take the whole family to a park or the creek (maybe with a stop for ice cream on the way home). Afterwards, your child can be free to get on the computer for an hour. They might balk at first, but once this has become a ritual, you’ll all be in sync.
