What are some face-lift procedures?

Arthur W. Perry, MD
Plastic Surgery
An explosion of face-lifting procedures occurred in the 1990s. Different plastic surgeons began hawking their favorite procedures. Some favored the superficial musculo aponeurotic system (SMAS) lift, some simply tightened the SMAS, and some removed a section and repaired the remaining tissue. (The SMAS, or superficial musculo aponeurotic system, is a collection of muscles and fibrous tissue stretching from the forehead to the neck.) Other plastic surgeons took a more complex approach, lifting the "deep planes" of the face, sometimes tightening muscles individually. More aggressive surgeons advocated the "subperiosteal" face-lift, going all the way down to the bone. Coming full circle, other plastic surgeons felt this was overkill and reverted to the single-layer, skin-only face-lift.

While some plastic surgeons lift the tissue and reposition the fat volume of the face, others remove this tissue. Still others add fat to the face. Some cut the muscles of the neck to allow for an uplifting of the mouth. Others warn never to do this.
