If it is treated promptly, keratitis is not usually serious. People who are immediately prescribed medication for the underlying cause should not suffer permanent damage. If left untreated, though, keratitis can become very serious. Infections and ulcers can permanently scar the cornea, or they can spread to the entire eye. Either possibility can cause permanent vision loss. Also, if the eye becomes too infected, it may need to be removed.
