Viral eye infections, by their very nature, affect the eye and its functions, chief among them vision. In milder cases of infection, such as with conjunctivitis, the eye may become sensitive to light or vision may become blurred due to buildup of discharge. More severe cases, such as CMV retinitis, can damage the retina, the tissue at the back of the eye that handles eyesight, leading to more serious vision problems. Long term damage can permanently damage the retina or cause it to become detached, leading to blindess.
