What causes astigmatism?

The initial cause of astigmatism is usually unknown and most people are born with the disorder. Astigmatism is caused by eye injury in some cases. All astigmatisms involve an abnormal curve to the cornea or lens, where it is curved more sharply in some areas than others. Because of this, images are distorted or blurry. It can sometimes occur with other vision problems like near-sightedness or far-sightedness, though neither disorder causes the other.
