What are the health benefits of lutein and zeaxanthin?

Usually discussed together, lutein and zeaxanthin are  two carotenoids that may help preserve eye health. Found naturally in the retina, they’re believed to protect against damaging high-energy light beams, and studies suggest that diets rich in lutein and zeaxanthin may help slow the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. Researchers at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary found that a high daily intake of lutein and zeaxanthin via dark green, leafy vegetables slashed the risk of AMD by 43 percent.

According to USDA researchers, zeaxanthin intake may also reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, particularly of the lung and breast.
