How hard do I need to exercise to lose weight?

Dawn Marcus
Neurology
You don't have to huff and puff and exercise vigorously to lose weight. Researchers in Texas compared weight loss among overweight, sedentary women who performed one of four exercise programs for one year. The women all started walking 100 minutes per week at moderate intensity. This would be equivalent to a brisk walk where you're still able to talk while you're walking. If you can sing while you're walking, you need to increase your intensity level. Exercise duration was increased to 150 to 300 minutes per week and intensity varied from moderate to vigorous. Vigorous exercise would be where you would feel too winded or out of breath to carry on a conversation. At the end of the year, weight loss and heart benefits were similar in all of the exercise intensity groups. It was more important to walk at least 150 minutes per week than to use a vigorous intensity of exercise.

My first recommendation is you need to work smart before you work hard.  Be sure to have proper technique and proper form when completing exercise.  Without these components, you put yourself at a higher risk for injury which will prolong your benefits.

In order to lose weight, you need to burn 3,500 calories which is equal to 1 pound of fat.  In order to lose that weight, you need to know how many calories your body burns while at rest.  Following, you will be able gage how much exercise is needed to burn those 3,500 calories.  If you are unsure how many calories you burn during exercise then consider investing money into a device such as a bodybugg.  A bodybugg will help monitor the calories your body burns during exercise.   Again, after figuring out the amount of calories your body burns while at rest and the amount of calories you burn during exercise, you can effectively figure out how much exercise is needed to lose weight.  Best of luck!
