The CDC estimates that approximately 15% of adults engage in binge drinking, which is the common cause of ethanol (alcohol) poisoning. Binge drinking is defined as a man consuming five or more drinks on an occasion or a woman consuming four or more drinks. They also estimate that approximately five percent of adults in the US are heavy drinkers, averaging two drinks per day for men or one daily for women.
