What is the function of estrogen in women?

The "female" hormone, estrogen causes the uterine lining to thicken during the menstrual cycle in preparation for pregnancy. It stimulates the growth of breast tissue and maintains blood flow to and lubrication of the vagina. It has many other effects, including maintaining bone density and keeping the skin and vaginal lining elastic.
