How does estrogen cause uterine cancer?

The hormone estrogen triggers growth of the uterine lining. This is a normal part of the menstrual cycle. However, in some women too much estrogen causes too much growth in the uterine lining, which results in uterine cancer. Uterine cancer usually occurs after menopause, if a woman has been exposed to excess estrogen for a number of years.
