What should I know about taking estrogen?

There are many different forms of estrogen, including tablets, transdermal systems ("skin patches"), gels, and others. It's important to follow all of your doctor's orders and label instructions to get the most benefit from these products. It's also very important that you frequently re-evaluate whether you still need to use a medication containing estrogen. See your doctor at least twice a year to discuss whether the benefits you're getting from estrogen still outweighs its potential negative side effects.  These increased risks or side effects include cancer, blood clots, stroke and heart attack.
