Are there any risks in taking Premarin?

Recently, research has found that there are some worrisome risks associated with estrogen medications like Premarin when it is given to postmenopausal women.

The risks of Premarin include blood clots to the heart (heart attacks), brain (stroke) and legs (deep vein thrombosis). There is also an increased risk for breast cancer, uterine cancer, gall bladder disease and dementia in certain women. So we look at each woman carefully and individually, weighing the benefits and risks of these problems against the quality of a woman's life before we prescribe Premarin. Premarin alone is usually only given to women who have had a hysterectomy to remove their uterus because it can cause the lining of the uterus to thicken, and that is a risk factor for uterine cancer.
