How does deep brain stimulation treat an essential tremor?

If your essential tremor is severely impacting your life, your doctor may recommend a surgical procedure called deep brain stimulation. Small electrodes are placed in the part of your brain that causes your tremor. Painless shocks interrupt the signals that cause your muscles to shake.
