Can vacuum devices be used to treat erectile dysfunction?

Dr. Jeanne Morrison, PhD

For men who don't want to, or are unable to, use medications to treat erectile dysfunction, vacuum devices may be a good treatment option. These vacuums, sometimes called penis pumps, are hollow tubes connected to a suction pump. The tube fits over the penis and the pump is then used to create a vacuum suction that brings blood into the penis, creating an erection. Once the penis is erect, a constrictive device (like an elastic, rubber band ring) is placed at the base of the penis, allowing a man to keep the erection long enough to have sex. The device is then removed after intercourse. Although this is a temporary solution for erectile dysfunction, it's less expensive and has fewer risks than many other treatment options.
