What is the intellectual prognosis for children with infantile spasms (IS)?

The prognosis for children with infantile spasms (ISs) is dependent on the underlying causes of the seizures. The intellectual prognosis for children with IS is generally poor because many babies with IS have neurological impairment prior to the onset of spasms. Spasms usually resolve by midchildhood, but more than half of the children with IS develop other types of seizures. There appears to be a close relationship between IS and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, an epileptic disorder of later childhood.

The intellectual prognosis for children with infantile spasms is all over the place. It very much depends on how successful doctors are in making the diagnosis and how quickly infantile spasms is treated. A minority of children with infantile spasms who have an unknown cause of spasms, or something that is mild, can have normal intellectual outcomes. Still, with the best technology and the best drugs available, the majority of children do not have normal outcomes, and mental retardation or intellectual impairment are a possibility. That is why doctors are aggressive and taking risks in the diagnosis and treatment of infantile spasms.
