What is rasburicase?

Rasburicase (brand name Elitek) is a medication used to treat a condition called hyperuricemia, in which blood levels of a potentially toxic substance called uric acid are increased. However, not all people with hyperuricemia should use rasburicase. This medication is meant to be used only when hyperuricemia is caused by chemotherapy.

When chemotherapy is used in certain types of cancer, such as leukemia or lymphoma, the cancer cells break open and release their contents into the bloodstream. One of the substances released is uric acid. If levels of uric acid become too high, your doctor may prescribe rasburicase.
