What is galsulfase?

Galsulfase is a prescription medication used to treat the symptoms of Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome. Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome causes the body to fail to properly break down certain sugars and proteins. Over time, this can allow them to build up, causing symptoms that include vision loss, hearing loss, changes in mental abilities, muscle changes, distortion of facial features, abnormal bone structure, trouble breathing and enlarging of organs. This medication is not a cure, but may help relieve symptoms so that mobility and walking ability improve. It is administered by injection and should only be given by a licensed and qualified medical professional. The brand name of galsulfase is Naglazyme.
