What is Creon 10?

Creon 10, also known by the generic name pancrelipase, is a prescription enzyme combination that improves food digestion when the pancreas is not functioning properly. Creon is a combination replacement of three enzymes normally produced by the pancreas: lipase, protease and amylase. These enzymes are necessary for the digestion of fats, proteins and sugars. Medical conditions like cystic fibrosis, chronic inflammation of the pancreas and a blockage of the pancreatic ducts can prevent these enzymes from being produced and secreted when needed. Without them, food is not digested and the stools can be frequent, fatty and unusually smelly. The "10" refers to the amount of lipase (in number of thousands) in the capsule, so Creon 10 contains 10,000 units of lipase, plus 37,750 units of protease and 33,200 units of amylase.
