Sex hormones  are present in low concentrations in children before puberty, often at levels too low to be detected with the standard tests used during puberty and adulthood. Research has shown that estradiol levels are higher in girls than in boys, even before puberty. Some experts argue that a higher concentration of estradiol in girls results in earlier puberty. Sex hormones have been shown to affect bone growth and nerve development in children before puberty.
