What is nontoxic goiter?

Dr. Jeanne Morrison, PhD
Family Practitioner

Goiters occur when your thyroid gland enlarges. Sometimes goiters pose a health risk, and other times they do not. A nontoxic goiter does not produce extra thyroid hormones, so in many cases this kind of goiter is not a serious threat to your health. However, if a nontoxic goiter gets too large, it could pose other complications such as difficulty breathing or swallowing. In other situations, a nontoxic goiter can begin producing extra hormones and become toxic, so any goiter should be monitored by your doctor.
