What are treatment options for nontoxic goiter?

If your thyroid is functioning at a normal level, you may not need treatment for a goiter. However, if your goiter becomes toxic, you may need to take thyroid hormones to regulate its function. Radioactive iodine is another medication option to decrease the size of a goiter. If your goiter is so large that it is causing difficulty swallowing or breathing, your doctor may recommend surgery.
